Area Ministry Day 2007

Last year we put the call out to those who were already in and those thinking about taking on the special ministry of parish leadership. The response was great and on November 3rd over 70 people, lay and clergy joined Bishop Elliott at Base Bordon, Barrie to attended our first Parish Leadership Bootcamp.

The aim of the event was to replace the jam-packed 2 hour Wardens & Treasurers Workshop that York-Simcoe and the Synod Staff use to hold in Februray/March every year with a full day of interactive workshops and keynote speakers. Our hope was to give attendees leadership basics and the time they needed to absorb the all the information given.

When asked what she liked about the event, Rev. Heather McCance from the Parish of Sharon Holland Landing said, "Having knowledgeable people right there to ask questions and to clarify procedures and diocesan policies was beneficial. It was great having so many from other churches there to compare notes with."

Keynote speaker Ward McCance talks to the attendees about basic administrative structures.

Debbie Reilly, People’s Warden at Christ Church Stouffville had this to say about the Bootcamp, “It was quite helpful, I learned a bit about the extent to which wardens can be held accountable, and I learned lots about why the diocese has a say in most of the really significant decisions to be taken at the parish level...ie the involvement of approval by the trusts committee.”

Rev. Canon Elizabeth Hardy speaks to a group attending the Real Estate workshop.

York-Simcoe's full day Bootcamp format has been embraced by other Areas in the diocese and on March 1st, 2008 over 100 people in York-Credit Valley joined Bishop Poole at their Parish Leadership Workshop.

Richard Dentinger talks to the group about human resources issues.
